TERM 1 VACATION CARE
The programs for the Term 1 Vacation Care program are now up on the school website and bookings are coming in. The children are excited that we have taken their advice and programmed favourites such as going to a restaurant on the train, revisiting the bookshop, having Lewis’s horse come to visit and creating animal and insect sculptures. Bookings can be made online here.
THE PROGRAMS AT OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE
The programs at the OSHC are developed after observing the children, talking with them about their interests, and engaging with parents. This year our goals for the children are all related to respectful communication and developing great social skills.
You can see our journey through the program on the board, but also through our Journal. A recent entry on our discussions with the children on what happens when words and feelings are hard to express, shows how the activities here make a positive impact on each child’s development.
REFLECTING ON THE POSITIVE INFLUENCE OF A GREAT OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE EDUCATOR
Twenty years ago, this month, an educator sat down with a new child at an Outside School Hours Care service. The child was seven and very unimpressed that mum had returned to work.
The educator began the first of many ‘getting to know you’ conversations which identified that he was passionate about reading and liked maths and liked to create things. She introduced him to origami. An early sample sits on my desk and fascinates all the children.
Years later he is still creating pieces of increasing complexity. The origami has become an outlet for creativity, and a time of stillness to balance his busy schedule as a doctor at Perth Children’s Hospital.
