Rundown on GGS Rugby

Guildford Grammar School competes in the PSA rugby competition, which is known as the Brother Redmond Cup.  There is a steep rugby tradition at Guildford Grammar School, with the school successfully lifting the Brother Redmond cup on eight occasions; most recently in 1994.

In 1959 the School’s first rugger union football team entered the West Australian Schoolboys’ Competition. It was a new era in Guildford Grammar School sport. At the beginning of the season the practice consisted of a small but enthusiastic band of players completely devoid of any knowledge of the game. The School first played against Christ Church Grammar School’s second team and later John Curtin High School, Scotch, Kent Street High and Midland High School.

Rugby was first introduced as an unofficial PSA sport in 1961, but by 1963 the sport was an official PSA sport, with Scotch College the first recipients of the Brother Redmond Cup.
Since the inception of the competition Guildford has won the cup in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1994.
Rugby is played during Terms 2 and 3.  Each year group from Years 7-12 fields a boys team and in 2018 we welcome the newly formed Guildford Grammar School Girl’s Sevens team.

The rugby program is coordinated by a number of teachers who are well qualified to coach, with the support of professional coaches who come into school to deliver specialist coaching and staff training.  Off the field, teams work closely with the School’s Strength and Conditioning instructors to continually improve their on-field performance.

Rugby at the Preparatory School is a vibrant, dynamic and committed part of the School’s winter sporting program. Boys and girls in Year 5 and 6 commit themselves fully to a demanding rugby program which gets underway in February each year as the players get ready for the JPSSA.  The 1st Team plays a number of pre-season games each year against clubs across WA in preparation for our JPSSA fixtures.  The Preparatory School has a healthy relationship with many clubs across our state. At present we have two rugby teams.

The Preparatory School has embarked on Rugby Tours to Singapore every second year, the last tour being in April 2017.  Staff members from the Preparatory School have organised and run the highly successful Guildford Sevens Tournament for the past ten years. This festival of running rugby has attracted support and participation from all clubs across Western Australia, and a number of Schools, all at Under 11 and Under 12 age groups.

Tackle Walla Rugby is offered to our Year 2 to 4 students each year to develop a love for the game, broaden their enjoyment of sport, hone their skills and provide ample opportunity to challenge themselves in the art of playing rugby – this happens in Term 2 and 3.

Guildford Grammar School has close ties with Rugby WA and the Western Force .  Members of our rugby teams have opportunities to take part in annual pre-season training camps and regular rugby tours. Recent tour locations have included New Zealand and Singapore. Students are also encouraged to play representative rugby and a number of our players have represented the State of WA at various levels.

Rugby Union does not discriminate against players of different shapes and sizes, in fact it whole-heartedly embraces their contribution to create the most diverse and dynamic of field games. The sport help develops leadership, team spirit, courage, sportsmanship, and friendship. These values and traditions develop from the first time a young player shakes hands with their opposite number, leading to a lifelong passion for the game at all levels. Foremost, the game of rugby embodies our Guildford Grammar School values.  We aim to provide a program that is appropriate for every student at the School, from the enthusiastic player new to the sport to the top state representative player. Having fun and meeting new challenges, while developing a sense of teamwork and fair play, are central to what we try to achieve with our unique playing style and culture.
