Term 2, Week 1

Anne Dunstan, Principal of Guildford Grammar School“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Viktor Frankl, Austrian neurologist and Holocaust survivor)

There has been much to challenge us in recent times.  Nevertheless, I have been moved by the capacity of our staff, students and families to adapt, cope and support one another.  I thank all of the families who have communicated with us to provide encouragement, feedback and care.  For those who have reached out when they are struggling – thank you; seeking help can be difficult but we are glad that you have.

A key message I shared with the staff in a virtual address on Tuesday morning, is that over these next two weeks we are not seeking perfection.  What we are seeking is to be fully present for our students and each other, to be patient and to maintain our perspective.
Whilst many things may still be in a state of flux, one key thing – our connection with each other (whether in person or virtual) - will be constant.  This is what we do so well at Guildford Grammar School.  We will continue to communicate with you, to provide updates on our progress back to some sense of normality.
Of course, we are being cautious.  It is important that we do not jeopardise the gains made by our school community, our State and our nation by throwing caution to the wind.  We know that we need to be vigilant, which is why we will not be resuming all school operations all at once.  We have ensured our learning platform is up to date and accessible, we have increased our cleaning regimes, distributed more hygiene supplies across the campus and we urge anyone in our community who is feeling unwell to please stay home.

I am sure we all want to see our school community thriving again, not just surviving; but we will need to be patient and continue to have safety as our highest priority.  I am looking forward to seeing our students and staff inspired by their work and learning together and witnessing our School gradually coming to life again.
