The first day of the 2018 school year will long be remembered as an historic day in the life of Guildford Grammar School.
For the first time since 1901, female students will commence in the Senior School in years 7, 8 and 11. The 49 girls will join more than 100 girls currently enrolled in the preparatory school.
Headmaster Stephen Webber said he had been delighted by the enthusiasm of the new students and their families.
“The girls attended an orientation program at the end of 2017 with a number of new boys who are also joining the School this year. It was wonderful to see the students sharing this experience together and beginning new friendships,” he said.
“In the lead up to the commencement of School there has been a real sense of excitement amongst students, parents and staff.”
Preparations for the new students were finalised over a busy Christmas break, with the facilities completed, the arrival of uniform items and students visiting the school to attend a number of our programs.
Mr Webber said the School community was especially pleased that a number of girls who have attended the Preparatory School will continue into Year 7 in the Senior School this year, an option not previously available to them.
“We are so pleased the girls will continue to share their enthusiasm and talents in our School,” he said
By 2019, girls would be enrolled in all years and boarding for girls in the Senior School was on track to commence in 2020.
Mr Webber said from 2018 girls will have full access the School’s broad range of curriculum choices, thriving performing arts program and participate in a flexible sporting program that provides excellent opportunities in athletics, swimming, rowing, cricket, tennis, hockey, netball, cross country, water-polo, basketball, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball, and 7s rugby.
“As we start a new chapter in the life of our School, we will retain and celebrate the values and traditions that have been important to our community for more than a century. We are sure that our new students will embrace these as others have before them,” he said.
“This is a very exciting time for our School. Our future is strongly aligned to an inclusive and diverse culture that reflects the modern workplace and world in which our students live.”
