Burnley FC partnerships bring Soccer Excellence Program to the School

23 Mar 2016

Guildford Grammar School is pleased to announce a new partnership with Burnley FC in the Community, the community arm of the English Football League Championship Club, Burnley FC.  The partnership was officially launched last week by Headmaster, Mr Stephen Webber, and Mr Paul Wozny, Head of Football Development Overseas, and is the sole Australian partnership for Burnley FC in the Community.

Facilitated by highly-qualified coaches and directed via Burnley FC, the partnership will see a Soccer Excellence Program offered to Guildford Grammar School students from this year. The intensive three-term course will combine academic studies with specific footballing education including; enhanced playing opportunities, routes into the professional game and a timetable tailored to the individual athlete.

The aim of the Soccer Excellence Program is to use soccer as a vehicle to develop young men through a well-rounded sporting education, providing social and physical benefits for the students.  Providing fun, challenging and progressive coaching initiatives for young players, the program is designed to bridge the gap between grass roots and academy soccer and create a route into the professional game.

The program will be open to students from Year 7 through to Year 12, with regular coaching also available to students in the Preparatory School as a pathway into the Senior School at Year 7.

In the long-term, it is hoped that the link with an English professional football club may allow Guildford Grammar School students to establish careers in sport in the United Kingdom.

Neil Hart, CEO of Burnley FC in the Community said; “This international partnership is a great opportunity to showcase brand-Burnley FC to a new audience in Australia, and it will also offer students exciting new ways to develop their football skills and knowledge whilst using the fantastic facilities available at Guildford Grammar School. We are delighted to partner with this outstanding school and we look forward to a long and fruitful relationship.”

The Headmaster of Guildford Grammar School, Mr Stephen Webber, is excited about the opportunities that our partnership with Burnley FC will provide to our students in terms of professional coaching, personal skill development and potential future pathways in what is a truly global sport. “The staff involved with the Burnley FC program are very experienced and we look forward to the strong relationship continuing to flourish in the years ahead.”
